Maslenitsa: Thick Pancakes with Red Currants 'Kissel' Sauce
I decided to post the recipes I liked here in the blog parallel to the postcards theme. Won't be posting many recipes though. It still is a postcards blog in the first place. :P Oh, got one more postcard while I was cooking the pancakes. It's an official from Netherlands that was bought by the sender in an antique shop in France. :]
The following week the Orthodox and Russian folk tradition celebrates a holiday called "Maslenitsa" (from Russian "maslo" - butter) also known as the Butter or Pancake Week. It is celebrated during the last week before the Great Lent (7th week before the Easter holiday, Orthodox religious calendar in this case).
The pagan side of the holiday: It celebrates the end of Winter, during the week people eat round yellow pancakes that represent the sun, play games like snowball fights and visit relatives and on the last day of the week - Forgiveness Sunday - burn on a bonfire the symbol of this holiday - a straw doll representing Maslenitsa (or Kostroma) and Winter itself.
The religious side of the holiday: The beginning of Great Lent is traditionally tied to the beginning of Spring. During the Maslenitsa week people aren't allowed to eat meat already, so rich foods like pancakes (butter, eggs and milk) are eaten instead.

Thick Pancakes with Red Currants 'Kissel' Sauce
The Pancakes
Ingredients (for 2-4 people):
3 eggs
150 ml milk
130 g flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
small pinch of salt
cooking oil
Cooking (cooking time about 30 minutes):
Separate egg yolks and whites. Put the yolks into a bowl, add milk and mix well. Add flour, baking powder and salt to the bowl and mix the dough well. Whip the egg whites to stiff peaks and carefully add to the dough. Bake small pancakes on a hot pan using a bit of oil.
The Sauce
Ingredients:
400 gr frozen red currants (or other berries)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon potato starch
Cooking (about 7-10 minutes):
Put frozen berries and sugar into a pot and cook the berries and the juice (from unfreezing the berries) until boils. Dissolve the starch in some water and gradually add to the berries while stirring at the same time. To be sure the sauce isn't too thick don't pour all starch at once. Cook for some more seconds till thickens and serve. If the sauce is really thick - you can also serve it as a separate dessert called "Kissel". Serve Kissel as it is or with milk.
Enjoy! :]

New Zealand: Lake Tarawera
This week isn't that rich with post as I would like it to be, but still there are some very pleasant surprises in the mailbox. Today I received two very very colorful postcards from Australia (but showing places in New Zealand). To prolong the pleasure, I'm posting one card today and one card later... probably tomorrow.
Received probably the last birthday present this year - a great ukiyo-e (Hokusai) calendar. And right away I did some creative decorating in my room. Now I have an exhibition of postcards and the calendar on my wall. :]
I finished collecting items for my Hobby Tag envelope, so I'll be sending it as soon as I have a chance to buy the stamp for it. And now I'm officially not accepting any more swaps till the next payday.

Malaysia: Children of the Stars
A wonderful greeting card I got with the Birthday swap package from verlustangst, Malaysia.
Christian Riese Lassen
The Children of the Stars
This month I already did quite a number of private swaps, so really have to slow it down not to go bankrupt.
On the "sending soon" list are two big item swaps - with Japan and Holland, so I'm not accepting any big item swaps till mid-March (if I won't decide to do big tags instead). Also I have to send 4 envelopes with teas (and there will be more coming for the Teas RR), so small item swaps (even if I'm greedy) are being put on hold for now too (unless I get some very good offers).
So far I'm concentrating on postcard sending - will be sending 4 private and currently 2 official this Monday. Missing Countries request is always open for offers.

Stamps: Mexico
As stamps are something that always comes with a postcard (either on the card or in some cases on the envelope) I'd like to post my collection of stamps too. I'm not being able to scan as usually, so the pictures are from post offices' sites and other people galleries.
Today's set of stamps is from Mexico.

Taiwan: Confucius Temple
Received my very first really shaped postcard today. ^^ I'm really excited about it!
The card came from Taiwan, and the place on the card is the Confucius Temple in Tainan.
Actually, posting b/w cards all the time is boring (simply because I'm addicted to color lately) and there are so many different cards I haven't posted yet.
For example, I have two Tainan cards, posting both now.

Germany: Darmstadt
This postcard shows a work by an Art nouveau artist F. W. Kleuken (died 22.08.1956 in Nürtingen) dated 1908/1910. Kleuken is a participant the former "Artist Colony" - a creative group in Darmstadt, Germany that consisted of many famous people and created at the beginning of the 20th century. It's a mosaic from the ground floor of the Wedding Tower (Hochzeitsturm) and is an allegory of love. The subject goes back to the wedding of the great duke Ernst Ludwig and princess Eleonore von Solms-Hohensolms-Lich in year 1905.

Russia: One more Pushkin Card
I decided to become more or less active in the Round Robin section of the Postcrossing Forum, so I started a Sweets RR, join if you like sending and receiving different tasty things from other countries.

China: Oriental Venice
A really snowy day, but still a lot of things to do. I have a notification for a package from my post office, nut sure for which swap, so I'll inform the sender as soon as I have the package in my hands. Probably tomorrow, because not sure I'll make it till the end of the work day.
As promised I'm starting to post black and white / sepia / reprints and original retro postcards I received as official and private swaps. I'll be posting the ones I have photographed or scanned. Right after this block is over, I'll resume with colorful postcards.
Today's postcard is a wonderful view from China, a place called Oriental Venice. The card has four great stamps: a Chinese lucky knot, a bridge, a mountain view and a tiger. And also a name stamp of the sender.

Dandelion means Postcards Blog and vice versa
The heading of this post is confusing a bit. It's because I should actually go to bed, but stay up late again.
Well, I decided to stay with this one standard design for blogger and make dandelions a symbol of this blog. Somewhere midway making my 100 official postcards received I got a very blue, a very dandelion-ish card from Wilma in Netherlands. That's the card of tonight (there will probably be a card of the day too if I'm not lazy).
I'm planning the next series of cards posted to be black and white and retro ones, so just wait a bit for the colorful ones to return. ^^
P.S. A warm welcome to my second follower. Thank you for reading! :]

India: Taj Mahal
No mail today, but another official postcard went to Japan. As I'm planning to go to the post office, I'll try to send more postcards. And now I'm making new pen and mail pal friends from Japan. Suddenly a lot of people just want me to add them to contacts in skype. Really a lot... hope I can keep up with all the requests.
So, today's postcard is a view of India.
